Some of Van Morrison’s best loved songs were performed in Irish as part of the 2016 Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish week).
The songs included Tupelo Honey and Contacting My Angel and were performed by Irish singers Hilary Bow and Liam Ó Maonlaí.
The performance appeared on the RTÉ show ‘Arena’ which is a part of the ‘Moondance: The Van Morrison Project’.
The project has seen Van Morrison’s lyrics translated into Irish by poets Gabriel Rosenstock and Cathal Póirtéir. Ó Maonlai will then perform the songs alongside the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra.
It is one of a number of projects coming from RTÉ as the broadcaster aims to promote the Irish language around the world.
RTÉ is also promoting the language via Irish language radio apps, to news bulletins in Gaeilge and dedicated children’s collections.
Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016 takes place from 1-17 March and RTÉ are expecting a big response.
Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, RTÉ Group Head of Irish Language said: “This year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge is particularly exciting for RTÉ as it’s about adding to and experimenting with the considerable amount of Irish-language output we have already put in place since the launch of the RTÉ Irish language action plan last autumn.”
