When a Victorian cottage in the centre of Dublin has been put up for sale with an asking price of €85,000, it became one of Dublin’s cheapest potential properties.
However, the home needed a great deal of work to be made fit to live in.
The Irish Independent created a video tour of the cottage, including interviews with potential buyers, and local builders to ask the question; does the property offer value for money?
The estate agent handling the sale, Ronan Cronion, explained that the asking price of €85,000 make the cottage the cheapest property available in the capital, and despite its dilapidated state, there has been a lot of interest.
He said: “We’ve got calls from all over the world from Irish expats that have a little bit of money now and want to invest back in Dublin.”
One potential buyer was Molly O’Brien. Her parents emigrated to America from Ireland, and she was raised in the States, but has since moved to live in Ireland.
She said: “I went in and had a look around and it’s quite cute, the floor obviously needs to be pulled up re-done, and the toilet doesn’t flush, realistically you would need to put a hundred grand in, but if you could just make it liveable and save as you go then in 10 years you would have a really nice place.”
Builders John McKeown and Mick Gannon also attended the open viewing and gave their professional opinion.
Mr Gannon said: “No, there’s no value for money in it to be honest with you. The young couples now, they can’t get a proper deal around Dublin.”
He then offers his advice as to where potential homebuyers may be better suited to be looking.
