The winners of American talent show The Sing Off claimed their title by performing a fantastic version of Hozier’s Take Me To Church.
Vanderbilt Melodores were crowned champions after they thrilled the judges and audience with their stirring rendition of the Irish musician’s megahit.
The group was formed by a group of students at Vanderbilt University in 2009.
The line-up has changed numerous times over the years, and the band hold auditions each year for new additions. At any one time, the band will usually have between 11 and 15 members.
The Meladores have sang in various competitions before they finally had their moment of glory on The Sing Off.
The Sing Off is a talent show with a twist in that all of its contestants are a capella groups – meaning they perform songs with no instruments and instead use vocal harmonies.
The performances are often spectacular and so far the show has ran for five seasons, albeit the fifth ‘season’ was simply a special two hour long episode.
The Meladores blew the roof off the arena with their performance of Take Me To Church. Judge Patrick told them: “That was awesome! There were even these great moments of silence you worked into it, that was really cool, I was very impressed.”
Fellow judge Jewel added: “I was really glad that you delivered, you didn’t let your brethren down.”
Former Boyz II Men star Shaun Stockman told the group: “This performance is pretty much what I have been trying to articulate the whole night.”
The comments had the audience in raptures and the group grinning from ear to ear. Even Hozier himself posted his congratulations to the group online.
