Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has hinted that the third series of the show may not be the last we see of the teenagers as there may also be a film on the horizon.
The popular comedy centres around the lives of the group of close-knit friends growing up in Derry during the Troubles in the 1990s.
Viewers have already enjoyed watching Erin, Orla, Michelle, Claire and English James try to navigate their way through teenage struggles for two series.
The filming for the third series is due to begin soon, and although McGee insists there will be no fourth series, she has admitted a Derry Girls movie is a possibility.
The talented writer said: “Who knows if Erin, Clare Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday? But for now, this is it for us, and we’re excited to start filming the series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.”
Derry native McGee was given an honorary degree at Queen’s University to mark the outstanding contribution she has made to Northern Ireland comedy.
Shew spoke to the BBC about her hopes for a Derry Girls movie in the future.
McGee explained: “There might be. I’d love to do, perhaps a movie of Derry Girls and then I have a few other projects but they’re very early days at the minute. I hope so. I haven’t even thought about it yet.
“We’ve always known that we wanted to do three series and all the actors kind of knew that as well. We’ve known this was coming but I think we’ve become like family ourselves, the cast and the crew so it’ll be sad when we wrap that last day.”
