A student has produced a magical video of the County Kerry by sending a weather balloon camera a staggering 30km up into the sky.
The footage from above clouds gives the skyline and mystical feel, particularly with the haunting piano soundtrack in the video. Landmarks such as the Lough Derg, Galway and the Aran Islands are highlighted for viewers to spot.
The project was part of Gerard Prunty’s work into the weather conditions in the earth’s stratosphere at University College Cork.
Prunty is in his final year studying Computer Science, and was named the Emutex Software Innovator of the Year for his achievement.
The weather balloon carried a box containing a camera and mobile phone that sent its GPS recording back down to earth every 60 seconds, so that its movements could be tracked.
In total, the balloon’s journey lasted three hours, before it floated back down to earth 200km away from where it was launched.
The video has been posted on YouTube, showing the balloon’s journey from beginning to end.
