Irish people worrying so much we top European anxiety league

We don’t tend to think about Irish people worrying…after all, we have a reputation for being easy going and quick to look on the bright side of life.

Maybe it has to do with that much-vaunted friendliness and love of the craic…well, be that as it may, it seems we aren’t so carefree after all.

A new study, reported in extra.ie , suggests we top the European league table when it comes to worrying…not a title most of us would want to own.

To be fair, we’ve had a lot to worry about over the last few years with unemployment and the crazy price of houses, not to mention that madness across the water called Brexit, and how it might affect the border in the North.

And now, of course, there’s the added anxiety over Covid19, and the government’s seeming inability to get on top of it…although to be fair, the same could be said of nearly every other country in the world.

A new study by Deloitte Ireland reveals that our anxiety levels are very high. More than half of us worry about our health and six out of 10 of us are concerned about the health of our families.

Irish people worrying about Covid and jobs

It means our confidence levels have dropped by 6% in the last two weeks, and it seems Covid is the main reason.

Daniel Murray of Deloitte Ireland, said Irish people are worrying about a number of issues, but most of them come back to the current pandemic: “While we saw overall confidence grow and remain steady as we emerged from the national lockdown throughout June and July, a recent uptick in COVID-19 case numbers and the implementation of localised restrictions across three counties have taken their toll on consumers in Ireland.”

The figures show that four out of 10 people aren’t confident about visiting shops; six out of 10 are uneasy about going to restaurants.

Concern about employment is also playing on people’s minds with three out of 10 of us worried about losing our jobs.

Part of the anxiety may be the lack of clarity over what happens next. The government, like governments across the world, has been criticised for giving mixed messages on how to keep safe during the current pandemic.

The fact that there seems to be no end in sight also adds to the problem, especially when every day seems to bring fresh warnings about how there may need to be to a second lockdown as the winter approaches, exacerbating health issues associated with Covid, flu and other seasonal illnesses.
