Irish comedy Derry Girls is one of the most binge-worthy series in the world, according to a study carried out by online tipster website olbg.com.
The show is set in the early-to-mid-1990s, during the Troubles in Derry, Northern Ireland.
With the primary characters being the four teenage girls (and poor James, one of their male English cousins), Derry Girls shows a wonderfully human side to the conflict.
The everyday threat of violence in Derry was apparent throughout the series, with soldiers checking the school bus for explosives, and roads closed down because of bomb scares.
Life would not have been considered normal to most people, and the concern for the safety of their family is visible in the show from parents Ma Mary and Da Jerry.
However, with the innocence of youth and the fearlessness of teenagers, the Derry Girls are almost oblivious to the dangers around them and continue on their paths to adulthood trying to impress the ‘cool boys’ and lying to their parents to go and watch Take That in concert.
It is no surprise that Derry Girls has become such a worldwide hit as most people will relate to the teenagers and remember similar stories from their own youth.
Writer Lisa McKee has joked that much of the show is semi-autobiographical, as she was herself a teenage girl growing up in Derry during the Troubles in the 1990s.
Viewers around the world have certainly taken the characters into their hearts.
The study found that Derry Girls has a ‘total binge score of 97.5 based on the average review given by viewers and critics.
Over the past decade the way people consume their content has changed. The instant access to thousands of shows of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime has led to viewers binging through hours of a single show.
There was a time when we would have to wait for the scheduled broadcast time and make sure we were plonked in front of the television at the correct time, but those days are now behind us.
The covid pandemic has delayed much of the work on the third series of Derry Girls, but fans have been promised it is in production and will be on their screens before too long.
There are also plans for a Derry Girls movie in the future.
Derry Girls placed third in the study for the most binge-worthy show on television. The top spot was taken by Please Like Me, with Freaks and Geeks in second place.
