Irish star Cillian Murphy has revealed that it is impossible for him to remain ‘unmolested’ when he goes out in public sporting his famous Peaky Blinders buzzcut.
Murphy, who stars as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in the hit BBC crime drama gets mobbed and shouted at by fans when he goes about his day.
He only gets a bit of peace and quiet when he grows his hair out.
He told the Sun: “I try to wear my hair longer if I can manage depending on what work I’m doing so that helps a bit.
“It’s when you get the haircut (Tommy’s famous buzz cut) that people start shouting at you. When I don’t have the haircut, I can get the bus quite unmolested.
“I’m just constantly surprised how Peaky Blinders continues to grow. Sometimes with these longform shows they tend to plateau, or dip, for a season, but Peaky seems to have incrementally gotten stronger and I’m really proud of that.”
Murphy went on to pay tribute to the show and his now iconic character.
He said: “It’s my job to inhabit these characters and Tommy Shelby in particular has been one of the greatest roles I’ve ever had the opportunity of playing.
“But this kind of a character does weigh on you after a certain time.
“Apart from the four months we spend shooting the series there’s also the journey to get there — it takes about six weeks prepping for the show, there’s the time involved getting into the physicality of Tommy, the accent, the voice — everything that I need to be able to inhabit the character.”
