Ireland affected by rising sea levels

Ireland would be one of the countries worst affected if, as expected, the ice caps continue to melt due to global warming.

In 2014, National Geographic published a terrifying map of what the world would look like if all the ice melts runs into the sea.

The island of Ireland looks considerably smaller, with much of the west side of the country going under. More than two thirds of Connaught would be completely submerged.

Experts estimate that if all the ice on earth was to melt, then the sea-level would rise by about 66 metres. A spokesperson at National Geographic said: “There are more than five million cubic miles of ice on Earth, and some scientists say it would take more than 5,000 years to melt it all.

“If we continue adding carbon to the atmosphere, we’ll very likely create an ice-free planet, with an average temperature of perhaps 80 degrees Fahrenheit instead of the current 58.”

Ireland would not be the only country to suffer in the case of such an event. Bangladesh would be completely submerged, as would much of China.

The coastal countries of the main body of Europe would all lose thousands of square miles of land.

America would also be deeply affected by the change. The swelling of the Atlantic Ocean would prove too much for the state of Florida, which would be underwater. On the west coast, San Diego would face the same fate at the hands of the Pacific Ocean.

The climate changes wouldn’t just affect the world’s oceans either. Large bodies of water like the Mediterranean Sea, and the Caspian Sea would also grow larger, and wash away the surrounding cities and countries.
