The area at Hills Lane has been sealed off for a Garda technical examination.
A post mortem will be conducted on Monday morning.
Superintendent Peter Duff from Tallaght Garda station said: “The identity of the deceased man has been confirmed and we are in the process of notifying his family.
“We believe that a number of gunshots were discharged at Hills Lane Crooksling.
“Consequently I am appealing for anyone who was in the Hills Lane or Crooksling areas between the hours of 9pm last night, Saturday 4th June to 9am this morning, Sunday 5th June, or who may have heard gunshots in this area, to contact Tallaght Garda station on 01 666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.”
Gardai do not believe the shooting is linked to the ongoing criminal gang feud in Dublin that has claimed multiple victims in the last six months.
A man and woman were arrested on Sunday evening by detectives investigating the death.
The suspects, both aged in their mid 20s, are being held at Tallaght and Rathfarnham Garda stations.
