Superstar musician Hozier has revealed that his Irish Mam has had a big hand in his success as she designs all his album covers.

The Take Me To Church singer, real name Andrew Hozier-Byrne, made the revelations during an interview on US talk show This Morning.

He revealed that his mother Raine is a talented artist and has played her own part in his rise in the music industry by designing his album covers.

He also joked that she tried to kill him by making him pose underwater for one of the designs.

The 30-year-old said: “Mum, you were hoping to drown me.

“I had said to mum before, ‘Try to think of the album sales if I do die on this shoot’.”

It is clear that Hozier is incredibly close to his mother and he revealed that she was a power of strength to him and the family growing up.

Hozier revealed that when he was just six, his father John suffered a nerve damage in his spine during surgery.

The Bray singer said: “It was an acquired spinal injury essentially, which was a life altering one.

“How my family got through that, witnessing my father in that position, it broke my heart in a way that you would never recover from.”

The interviewer asked Hozier if witnessing his father’s struggle had influenced his music in any way and he replied: “Yeah, of course.”

Hozier had previously discussed his father and his condition with the late Irish chat king Gay Byrne.

Speaking in 2015, he said: “That’s where childhood ends. That was, I suppose, the watershed of childhood.

“It changed all of our lives. It changed his life, it kind of ruined his life in a big way. I don’t know how my mum did it.

“When you’re on morphine the whole time, you’re watching someone you love kind of fade away in many ways.

“It’s an incredibly destructive drug in what it does to the mind and what it does to the body. He was immobile for a long time.”

The singer has since revealed that although his father remains in a wheelchair his health has vastly improved thanks to medical treatments.

Hozier recently celebrated his 30th birthday – on St Patrick’s Day. He was keen to thank the fans that had sent him good wishes on social media.

He said: “I’ve so much to be grateful for and in times like this, I’m reminded how much we all have to be grateful for. Seeing the best of people right now. Take care, stay safe, thank you!”
