Each year millions of tourists flock to Ireland to sample the atmosphere in cities such as Belfast and Cork, visit the country’s historical sites in Dublin, and admire the beautiful landscapes of Galway.
There are countless more destinations across Ireland that attract holidaymakers from all a around the world.
But what about people in Ireland? What part of the country do they like to visit for a break?
The answer is Kerry according to a recent survey carried out by Irish property company MyHome.ie.
Top 20 holiday counties for Irish people
1. Kerry – 24.5%
2. Galway – 17%
3. Cork – 14%
4. Wexford – 10%
5. Clare – 8%
6. Donegal – 6%
7. Mayo – 5%
8. Dublin – 3%
9. Wicklow 2%
10. Kilkenny & Waterford – 1.5%
12. Sligo – 1.3%
13. Tipperary & Antrim – 1%
15. Leitrim – 0.8%
16. Louth – 0.7%
17. Cavan & Offaly – 0.5%
19. Kildare & Meath – 0.3%
They asked more than 5,200 Irish people which county they most enjoy visiting for their holidays.
The south-west county came top of the poll with almost a quarter of people naming it as their number one destination.
Kerry is home to miles of glorious beaches and coastline, as well as boasting the ten highest peaks in the country.
It also contains numerous welcoming villages and cosy pubs as well as being the host county to the famous Rose of Tralee competition and various music events.
The Ring of Kerry, a 100-mile road tour around some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Ireland is also a hugely popular amongst holidaymakers.
Galway was voted Ireland’s second favourite holiday site, with 17% of votes, and Cork was third with 14%.
Bad news for the counties of Armagh, Laois, Fermanagh, Limerick and Westmeath who were only considered the favourite holiday spot by 0.17% of people.
Even worse for counties Carlow, Derry, Down, Longford, Roscommon, Monaghan and Tyrone, who failed to attract a single vote from the 5,200 surveyed.
The Irish tourism industry is set to see its best ever year, after several global marketing campaign by Fáilte Ireland over recent years.
It seems that as well as attracting visitors from other countries, Ireland is also being seen as a great holiday destination for its own people.
