Former soccer star David Beckham has spoken warmly of his love for Ireland and has also revealed why he believes his former team mate Roy Keane will do a great job as Republic of Ireland assistant manager.
In an interview with Glenda Gilson of TV3, Beckham said that not only does he love the people and culture but also that the country holds a special place in his heart as he got married to former Spice Girl, Victoria at Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin.
He said: “I love Ireland honestly. I’m not just saying it because you’re sat here asking me but I promise you I love Ireland. It’s a special place because we got married there. Every time I visit Ireland, it’s really unbelievable.”
Despite his superstar status, Beckham remains down to earth and enjoys visiting the local pubs in Ireland. He continued: “The people are so nice and I love Guinness so I can’t wait to come back.”
Roy Keane is a great addition
The 38-year-old retired as a professional player this summer to end a hugely successful career that has seen him star for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint Germain. He has also made more appearances for England than any other outfield player in their history.
He is looking to stay in soccer and is likely to become an owner of a team in the MLS, with Miami, Florida looking the most likely location.
While he doesn’t seem interested in going in to coaching himself, he believes his former captain at United will prove a big asset to Ireland boss Martin O’Neill. He said: “You know I’ve never played with a player that has been so driven and talented and the will to win, you know there is no one that I’ve played with that is like Roy.
“He’s the best captain I’ve ever played with. The best mid-fielder I’ve ever played with.”
Both O’Neill and Keane were European Cup winners as players and Beckham believes that Keane’s will to win could be inspirational to the Ireland squad.
