Spike Milligan was a brilliant writer, comedian, poet, actor and highly quotable wit. He was born in India to an Irish father and English mother. He took Irish citizenship in 1962 because the British Government declared him stateless.
He was one of the mainstays of British radio and television comedy for more than 50 years. He wrote the popular radio series, The Goon Show – a favourite with Prince Charles – as well as several accounts of his war time experiences with book titles such as Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall.
A razor sharp wit to the very end
He had a razor sharp wit that stayed with him until the end. He asked that his gravestone should bear the words: I told you I was ill. The church authorities wouldn’t allow such an epitaph so a compromise was reached with the phrase being written in Irish instead. He was buried with the Irish flag wrapped around his coffin.
He remains a hero to the modern day generation of alternative comedians.
