A mansion that was once owned by the famous brewing Smithwick family has been put up for sale with an asking price of €3.25million.

The eight-bedroom property is named Kilcreene Lodge and is located just five minutes away from Kilkenny city.

The stunning 17th century home sits in the middle of ten acres of ‘lush grounds’ which include a private lake.

It would certainly offer a life of luxury and a wonderful place to raise a large family for the next owners.

Kilcreen Lodge was built in 1690 and is noted by the Inventory of Architectural Heritage for the preservation of many of the original features.

In the late 19th century, brewery owner John William Smithwick purchased the property and hired architect Charles Geoghegan to increase the size of the home by 400%.

What he created was an incredible eight bedroom, eight bathroom mansion with many Victorian and Jacobean features still in place today.

Geoghegan was a respected architect and also worked on Annagh’s Castle in Kilkenny, as well as some of the notable bank buildings in Dublin.

Estate agents Sherry Fitzgerald, who are handling the sale, state that Geoghegan was ‘passionate about water supply’ and that Kilcreene Lodge was the first home in Co Kilkenny with running water in the bathroom.

The property was bought in 1999 by Gerry and Christine Byrne who spent money on renovations to restore the original house.

The listing deascribes the property as having “a host of reception rooms as well as a fully fitted kitchen which features original ceramic brick wall tiles, painted units and Aga cooker”.
