Irish football fans have been thanked by a former French prime minister as the boys in green continue to win over Europe.
Alain Juppe became the latest person to express his love for the Irish supporters who have been scoring brownie points for their nation throughout Euro 2016.
Mr Juppe, who is mayor of Bordeaux, tweeted a link to a story about hundreds of Irish fans partying in a tunnel on a wet night in the picturesque wine capital.
A video online shows the revellers singing to smiling police officers: “Stand up for the French police.”
A French officer, possibly keen for the party to be over so he could clock off for the night, is said to have responded in jest by singing: “Go home for the French police.”
What Mr Juppe wrote on Twitter translates as: “Football, just as we love it. Thanks to #IRL supporters and thanks to our police.”
The Republic’s fans have been winning people over since they landed in Paris ahead of their side’s first game against Sweden.
A group of Irish men were filmed helping an elderly couple change a tyre, another group of pals were filmed singing to a nun, while videos also emerged of Irish revellers cleaning up after themselves.
A fter the Republic’s matches against both Sweden and Belgium, Irish fans were keen to swap jerseys with the Swedes and Belgians.
Garda Superintendent Gerry Delmar, who is leading a team of eight gardai at the tournament, said last week the Republic’s supporters have been “very well behaved” and are proving to be a hit with fans from across Europe.
