Rogue swan requires police escort after wandering through traffic in Belfast

A rogue swan caused chaos and hilarity in equal measure as it went for a wander down a busy road in Belfast.

The swan would normally reside in the nearby Waterworks, but decided it wanted a taste of the big city life and took a stroll down Antrim Road.

Its presence caused plenty of distraction to drivers and it could have led to an accident.

However, the local police were on hand to escort the adventurous bird back to the safety of the waterworks.

Sinead Mackie was travelling along Antrim Road with a friend as the unlikely incident unfolded.

She recorded the swan being given a police escort on her phone and posted the video to social media.

She said: “The swan was actually walking up the Antrim Road on its own first, me and my friend went to the garage.

“On the way back down we saw the police men walking with it escorted by a police car with blue lights on. I just had to record it as it was so funny.”

Thankfully, the situation was resolved peacefully, as two police officers ushered the swan through the busy Belfast streets back home.

They even saw the funny side themselves, and posted the following statement, with puns aplenty.

“Police in North Belfast have safely returned a swan to the pond in the Waterworks, Antrim Road, Belfast at around 11:40am today (Friday 28th February).

“The swan in question was posing risk to itself and road users on the Antrim Road. Highly trained officers were able coax the swan onto the footpath, they then walked the swan back to the waterworks.

“The swan was unharmed by the ordeal however it’s presence on a main road ruffled a few feathers.

“Officers involved praised locals for keeping a birds eye view on the incident.

“We are glad the swan returned to the waterworks safely and avoided falling fowl of the law.”
