Irish star Saoirse Ronan bagged a well-deserved Oscar nomination for her performance as Jo March in Little Women – and was cheered on by her mam and dog.

She was nominated in the Best Actress category alongside some huge names such as Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Renée Zelwegger and Cynthia Erivo.

It is the fourth time Ronan has received a nomination which is an extraordinary achievement for the star who is still only 25 years old.

She was previously nominated in the Best Actress category for Lady Bird in 2018, Brooklyn in 2016 and in the Best Supporting Actress category for Atonement in 2008.

Ronan’s mother, Monica, posted a video of her reacting to the news that daughter Saoirse had been nominated for the top gong.

Monica was sat on the sofa with her dog Fran as the announcement was made. Fran was wearing a pink top that said: “Good luck Saoirse from your little woman.”

Monica watched on her laptop as the announcements were made. Erivo’s name was mentioned first, followed by Johansson.

Then Ronan’s name was called out, leading to a delighted reaction from Monica.

The proud mam cheered as she heard her daughter’s name and held her hands (and Fran’s paws) aloft before turning to the camera and reminding viewers that it was Saoirse’s fourth nomination.

The video was shared on social media by RTE’s Ray D’Arcy’s radio show.

The ceremony will take place on 9 February – good luck to Saoirse from all of us at Ireland Calling.
