Niall Horan explains Irish slang for Americans

Former One Direction star Niall Horan has explained several examples of Irish slang including ‘flute and ‘oul wan’ for an American audience.

The Irish singer gave the explanations as part of an interview with Vanity Fair magazine.

By the end of the video, Horan admitted that even he had started to realise that some of our slang words could be seen as ridiculous to outsiders.

He starts off with the words ‘sham’ and ‘banjaxed’ which could be seen as a word you would use to greet to a friend at the start of the evening and another to describe the state you might get in as the night progresses.

Horan said: “Banjaxed could mean when you’re absolutely obliterated drunk; ‘You were absolutely banjaxed last night’.”

The star admitted that he is a ‘bogger’ – which is someone who comes from outside Dublin.

He also explained words such as flute, hape, boyo, cod, dosser, jacks and many more.

When asked to explain the word ‘eejit’ Horan admitted: “It means you’re a fool or an idiot. I get that a lot. It’s a common Irish word.”

Horan had plenty of laughs reading out all the slang terms and the end of the presentation he started to realise what a strange place he came from.

He said: “That was interesting. I actually didn’t realise how ridiculous we were.

“But having read them and seeing them in bold capitals I now know that we are absolutely insane. So, this has been Irish slang on Vanity Fair with me, Niall O’Hodhrain.”
