Irish soccer star Sean St Ledger has remained coy about whether or not he is seeing global pop sensation Taylor Swift.
RTÉ sports presenter Tony O’Donoghue cheekily asked St Ledger about his relationship with Swift during a Skype interview a couple of days ago, but the star remained tight-lipped insisting he was “sitting on the fence”.
The Republic of Ireland international had created a social media frenzy when he tweeted a picture of himself and the ‘Shake It Off’ singer together on New Year’s Day 2015.
He had just arrived in America after joining MLS team Orlando City, and it seems he wasted no time in getting stuck into his new showbiz surroundings.
The picture was re-tweeted hundreds of times and attracted much attention from users who wanted to know if the two were an item.
There were also several comments wondering how the defender, born in the West Midlands of England, had managed to attract the glamorous Swift.
Many put it down to his ‘Irish charm’, while others suggested it was more likely that St Ledger had benefited from the ‘luck of the Irish’.
He is of Irish heritage with his grandfather coming from Co Wicklow.
Many male users took comfort in the fact that St Ledger had managed to gain the attentions of such a beautiful, successful and talented young woman, claiming that it “gave all men hope”.
Even businesses took notice of the alleged mis-match, with Dream Team pointing out the recent upturn in fortunes St Ledger has experienced both on and off the pitch: “Last season, Sean St Ledger was released by Ipswich. Now he’s playing alongside Kaka and reportedly dating Taylor Swift.”
Paddy Power also got in on the act with this post: “Sean St Ledger pulls Taylor Swift yet I got knocked back by Alison from Accounts at the work Christmas party. I give up. What’s the point.”
Fans will have to wait and see if there is any truth behind the rumours, but shouldn’t expect any announcements from the couple any time soon. St Ledger has clearly stated his position as a gentleman and will respect the privacy of his relationships. Swift has been protective of her private life throughout her career.
She has become a worldwide superstar since the late 2000s. Her second album Fearless was the best-selling album of 2009 in the US and made her the youngest ever winner of the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
In the past the media has linked her with several stars including Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal, One Direction’s Harry Styles, and international DJ Calvin Harris.
