The former PGA and US Open champion got engaged to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki on New Year’s Eve but not before getting permission from her parents.
Wozniacki was delighted when McIlroy proposed in Sydney, Australia, getting down on one knee and giving her a €150,000 engagement ring. She said: “He had asked my parents for permission, like traditional, which was great. Yeah, I was very happy.
“They were very happy for me, and his parents as well and everyone around us. So it’s a special moment, a special time in our lives.”

Both McIlroy and Wozniacki are former world number ones in their sports and the tennis star believes this helps to strengthen their relationship.

She continued: “It’s great to have someone there who understands you and is always there to support you,” she said.

“Obviously it’s both individual sports and both with a ball. I think mostly it’s just he understands how it is to be a professional athlete.

“All the expectations and all the ups and downs and how amazing it feels when you’re winning and how tough it can be when you’re not.”

It is likely to be a long engagement as both McIlroy and Wozniacki have a busy year ahead in their respective sports.
