Could this Irish choir actually get to be Christmas number one?

An Irish school choir is taking on some of the biggest stars in music with a beautiful rendition of Somewhere in My Memory – the song we will all recognise from the Home Alone movies.

The student choir at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has teamed up with their teachers, known as the GMIT Voices, to perform the holiday favourite.

Could this Irish choir actually get to be Christmas number one?

It has spent much of the week at number 2 in the Irish iTunes Christmas chart, and number 18 in the overall chart the Irish Independent reports.

The choir has released the single to raise money for Galway Hospice with all proceeds going to the cause.

The release on iTunes has seen the choir competing with all the traditional favourite Christmas songs such as Wham’s Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas.

The choir are hopeful they can maintain their position in the top 20 of the charts throughout the festive period, but who knows, with a little bit of luck they could yet claim the much-coveted Christmas number one spot.

Sean Rowland, who is the director of the choir, said: “We had no idea this could happen and are delighted. GMIT Voices (the staff choir) & The GMIT Student Choir only formed in February & September of this year respectively and what started out as a Christmas project uniting the two college choirs has become so much more.

“We wanted to reach out to the community and spread some Christmas joy. Getting a top 20 and a number 2 (so far) in the iTunes chart is the icing on the Christmas cake and we just want to thank everyone for their support.”

More than €1,000 has already been raised for the Galway Hospice. If you would like to purchase a copy of the song, then visit iTunes.
