Ed Sheeran makes music history achieving unique double victory

Singer Ed Sheeran has made music history by becoming the first musician to achieve a unique double victory in two different years.

The star has become the only UK artist to have the best-selling song for two separate years, as well as being the most played artist.

British star Sheeran is proud of his Irish heritage. He makes no secret of the influence Irish music had on him while he was growing up, and has even written music in the traditional Irish style.

But it is his more modern music that has led to him becoming such a hit with fans.

His popularity has become so great that he has even managed to one-up another major British star – Adele.

The Phonographic Performance Limited compile the annual charts from music usage and airplay data.

Sheeran has been one of the biggest names in music for the past decade and has featured heavily in the charts during his career.

While he has become a family man and even talked about possibly quitting the music industry, his popularity goes from strength to strength every time he returns with new music.

In 2021, He was the most played artist in the UK, while his single Bad Habits was the most played song.

It was a repeat of his success that was achieved in 2017 thanks to his huge hit album Divide and the global single Shape of You.

Following Sheeran in both second and third place for most played tracks was Tom Grennan.

French DJ and producer David Guetta was the UK’s second most played artist in 2021, flowed by Dua Lipa (3rd), Little mix (4th) and Coldplay (5th).

The only other artist to achieve the double success in the same year was Adele who did it first in 2011.

However, Sheeran has become the only artist to do it twice.
