Dublin councillors are considering using modular houses as a solution to the city’s homeless crisis.
Today the mayors of the four Dublin local authorities will view six different samples of modular housing and consider if they think any are suitable to provide temporary accommodation to the hundreds of homeless families currently staying in hotels.
The modular houses are built in a factory and can be assembled, plumbed, wired and decorated inside a day on site.
Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) is putting on an exhibition of the easy-build homes, with six different manufacturers on display.
It is hoped that up to 200 units could be erected in Dublin to ease the financial burden of placing families in hotels. So far this year, the DRHE has spent €4.5m on hotel accommodation for hundreds of families.
The problem is on the rise with August figures revealing there are 1,275 children belonging to 607 families in Dublin without a home, more than in the previous month.
The DHRE believe that modular housing is a real solution to this problem. Families will be able to cook, clean, play and relax in a place they can call home.
They could remain in the homes until they are able to re-enter the rental market or a social housing house becomes available.
