Ten Dublin homes raided in drugs cartel crackdown

Ten homes have been raided in the second Garda operation against a major crime outfit.

Properties in Kevin Street and Pearse Street in central Dublin were searched in the dawn blitz.

“The searches are being conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into an organised crime group which is involved in the distribution, sale and supply of controlled drugs in Dublin city centre and adjoining suburbs,” the Garda press office said.

About 80 gardai were involved.

The operation was launched two days after a high-profile move on relatives and associates of murdered gang figure David Byrne.

He was believed to be a key player in the Irish wing of an international cartel.

Eight different Garda units were drafted in for the latest crackdown.

Byrne was shot dead in the Regency Hotel in Dublin last month during a boxing weigh-in.

His murder was said to be part of a feud targeting associates of Christy Kinahan, a Spain-based Dublin native, who is being investigated over an international drugs and money laundering network.

One man was arrested during the raids.

It is understood he was detained after a background check confirmed an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Gardai confirmed the man had been taken to prison.

During the raids more than 50,000 euro in cash was recovered along with jewellery including top-end watches worth more than 20,000 euro and some drugs.

Gardai also said GPS tracker devices which can be fitted to vehicles were also seized, along with financial documentation.
