A passing motorist stopped at around 7.30am to give him first aid and CPR, investigators said.
The man, who had been walking south in the direction of Lincoln Place, was taken to St James’ Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the man’s body on Monday.
Gardai said they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the sudden death and have appealed for witnesses.
“There were a number of people on the street at that time and gardai are seeking their assistance,” a spokesman said.
